This weekend, I pulled out my rather massive Kate Spade bee cocktail ring and had many compliments and conversation starters around it. Like all true a "statement" pieces, it's pretty hard to miss. In all honesty, I mainly wore it accessorized with packet of tissues in hand to go see the new film of Me Before You— one of my favorite books (sorry, I didn't have a pair of Louis Clark's bumble bee tights!). While the movie doesn't have the time to encompass all of the complexities and layers to the characters and plot line, I truly enjoyed seeing the book come to life from Louisa Clark's crazy, quirky wardrobe to Will's sarcastic, witty one liners. The actors were endearing, lovable, and yes, I sobbed my heart out towards the end. I would recommend any loyal fan of the novel to see the movie and vice versa.
There are some books/movies you experience now and then that somehow stick with you for the rest of your life— this is one of them. My greatest take away from both adaptations is the rather moving message about living life to the fullest. It may be corny, but when I spot bumble bees now, I am immediately reminded of Louisa, this book, and the preciousness of our life itself. On the day I spotted this ring (right before the movie came out), I had the misfortune of meeting a woman who had lost her high school son as an innocent bystander trapped in the midst of a gang crossfire. He was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Her positivity was inspiring and withstanding, for lack of a better word. I took it as a sign and a reminder: “You only get one life. It's actually your duty to live it as fully as possible.”
