My Style: Closet Staples

I'm not one to buy multiple copies of the same item. While I have a particular style of chino shorts and button down shirts I swear by, I usually try to diversify my closet (you only live once, right?).

When I came across this flared skirt from J.Crew this spring, I knew I had found the perfect all purpose skirt. I love pencil skirts, but being in between petite and "regular" size height, it's hard for me to find a pair that's the right length. Often times, pencil skirts sit well above acceptable high waisted length or hang too low below the knee.

When I saw this fluted skirt in double crepe from J.Crew on sale this week at an extra 30% off sale price online, I knew I wanted to get it in another basic color. So, I went in store and actually got the black and blue one at an extra 40% off. #score

The skirt is fitted at the sides like a pencil skirt but is ever so slightly flared. It adds some subtle "flair" to the usual pencil skirt without looking too frivolous and informal. I particularly like that it hits me perfectly at the knee and right at my belly button. J.Crew describes it as the perfect piece for work, brunch, and parties, and I couldn't agree more. It really is closet staple and as a college student, I think it's perfect for job interviews, formal banquets, or internships. It's the perfect little black dress skirt, but I also love the green one which I wore in this post. The papaya and citrus would also be great for summer baby showers, garden parties, or even a wedding with the right top.
As always, J.Crew does it again.

What are some of your favorite closet staples?
