Advice for a College Tyro: A Little Perseverance Goes a Long Way

I have always thought of myself as a decent writer.
I love words and naturally love writing and reading, but coming to college has already
pushed me to become better in many respects. Most of my classes this semester are based
on writing papers and less on actual exams. I'll take a research and papers any day, but I've
definitely had to step up my game!

I'm taking a philosophy course this semester and it is unlike anything I have ever studied.
It's probably one of the hardest courses I've had to take in my academic life, but it has already
had an incredible impact on how I think and look at the world. They say you'll take a class your
first semester of college that will flip your world upside down: well, philosophy is exactly that course.

Two weeks ago, I had to write my first philosophy paper and it was a complete disaster.
Our class average was extremely low, yet I had still managed to score below average...
As in 17 out of 30.

I can't really remember the last time I actually failed that miserably on a school assignment.
My inner type A wanted to scream and go crawl in a hole.
But...

I took that failure and was bound and determined to do better next time. I went to
office hours, discussed with friends, and re-wrote my paper only seven times. I might
have been a little obsessed, but I really was not going to rest until I knew I would succeed
or at least hit the class average!

I was so restless waiting for that paper to get graded.
It felt like weeks until I got it back yesterday...
29 out of 30.

I was shocked and may have screamed out loud- in front of my class.;-)
I had hit rock bottom and bounced back up.

So college tyros, there are going to be those times you will fail. But, believe that a little hard work and persistence will help you persevere in the long run.

"Success flourishes only in perseverance- ceaseless, restless perseverance."

P.S. Five months later and that paper is still taped onto my bedroom wall as motivation!
